Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $894,348)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Alaska Native Justice Center will use the grant funds to: enhance its Juvenile Alcohol Safety Action Program, in conjunction with the Third District Court, to monitor rural youth arrested for minor alcohol offenses; provide civil legal advocacy services to post-release, non-violent, adult, Alaska Native male and female offenders; and enhance the juvenile and adult, non-violent offender reentry services in collaboration with the Alaska Division of Juvenile Justice and Alaska Department of Corrections.
