Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $169,926)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.
The Bergen Community College, Center for Suburban Criminal Justice (the Center) will work in partnership with professionals in criminal justice, social service, and education to share research with community leaders, academic audiences, and policy makers. The activities of the Center will include participation in seminars for high school, middle school, and elementary school students enrolled in the states of New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut. In addition, the activities will focus on professional training, community awareness, and work with at-risk individuals. The Center will respond to emerging national problems and highlight important issues and crime trends with its focus on the unique characteristics of suburban communities.
