The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The city of Barre Police Department will reduce the drug activity and associate crimes in the city and surrounding communities. The city of Barre has seen a significant increase in drug activity over the past several years which recently progressed to hand-to-hand drug deals being conducted on the city streets in broad daylight. With the increase in drug activity, they have also seen an increase in other drug related crimes. Their overall goal is to reduce or eliminate the illegal drug trade and use, other criminal activity, and crimes against a person that are connected to illegal drugs within the city of Barre and central Vermont.
