Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $134,152)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Madison Police Department's will continue their public education and counseling to victims of domestic violence to effectively prevent new incidents by reducing the number of domestic violence cases. They will also hire an additional police investigator to work on domestic violence cases. The Domestic Violence Unit's approach will assist the abuser to become accountable by punishing him/her to the full extent of the law. They will prevent the problem of abusers from inflicting more violence on the victim.
