Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $174,398)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe will use the grant to enhance the 9-1-1 service to all residents for the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and the immediate surrounding areas of Dewey and Ziebach Counties. The Cheyenne River Sioux will purchase needed technology enhancements, such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and cell phone locator. These upgrades will decrease emergency response time and save lives on the reservation.
