Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $424,815)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.
The Montgomery County Government will implement the Maryland Regional Gang Initiative, a collaborative partnership between Montgomery and Prince George's County. They will build upon the foundational work and recommendations of the Joint County Gang Prevention Task Force, as well as the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention's Comprehensive Gang Prevention Model. The funds will be used to support three anti-gang strategies: prevention, intervention, and suppression. The prevention component of this project focuses on a range of programs and services to individuals and their families, who are at risk of gang involvement and/or presently involved with gangs. The intervention component of this project offers shelters to youth desiring to leave gangs, expands mental health services for gang-involved youth and conducts domestic violence awareness campaigns.
