The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The King County Sheriff's Office will support their Gang Enforcement Unit located in the Southwest Precinct, where the highest concentration of criminal gang activity currently exists. The gang unit consists of one detective sergeant and two detectives who will receive uniform gang training and will proactively patrol high crime areas in King County. The unit will also be sent out on gang suppression and enforcement missions, conduct joint operations with law enforcement partners, and participate in local communities events. The King County Sheriff's Office will also fund office space reconfiguration, purchase equipment and supplies, and support police officer attendance at the Northwest Gang Investigators Association conference.
