Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $178,870)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The County of Alachua will fund a Criminal Justice Diversion Resource Coordinator for the Alachua County Department of Court Services. The Criminal Justice Diversion Resource Coordinator will examine the existing systems response to individuals with mental health, chemical dependency, and co-occurring disorders who are frequently incarcerated. He will identify gaps in the continuum of service that would address issues such as homelessness, lack of medical care, lack of transportation, and underemployment in the target population. The Criminal Justice Diversion Resource Coordinator will meet these needs through the development of public/private partnerships in the community, grant funds and endowments that are available for the provision of such services, and managing available contingency funds to provide direct services targeted at addressing these needs in the community.
