Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $281,439)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Competitive Program: National Initiatives, administered by the Office of Justice Programs' Bureau of Justice Assistance, furthers the Department's mission by assisting state and local jurisdictions in improving the criminal justice system and assisting communities in preventing drug abuse and crime. In FY 2008, the program will focus on funding local, regional, and national efforts within five major categories: 1) preventing crime and drug abuse; 2) enhancing local law enforcement; 3) enhancing local courts; 4) enhancing local corrections and offender reentry; and 5) facilitating justice information sharing.
The Family Justice, Inc. will implement the Reentry is Relational Project under category 4: enhancing local corrections and offender reentry. They will develop the capacity of a prison facility to partner with a local parole department to incorporate a family-focused, strength-based approach to enhancing reentry outcomes. Through a competitive search process, Family Justice, Inc. will partner with a department of corrections to incorporate the Relational Inquiry Tool into their current practice and increase cross-agency collaboration with community corrections. The goal of the project is to promote a seamless transition from prison to parole in two geographic locations by training prison and parole staff on family-focused tools and methods.
