The Edward Byrne Memorial Competitive Program: National Initiatives, administered by the Office of Justice Programs' Bureau of Justice Assistance, furthers the Department's mission by assisting state and local jurisdictions in improving the criminal justice system and assisting communities in preventing drug abuse and crime. In FY 2008, the program will focus on funding local, regional, and national efforts within five major categories: 1) preventing crime and drug abuse; 2) enhancing local law enforcement; 3) enhancing local courts; 4) enhancing local corrections and offender reentry; and 5) facilitating justice information sharing.

The National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C) will implement NW3C Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) project under category 5: facilitating justice information sharing. IC3 will support a national resource focused on suppressing internet crime. IC3 has become an international model in the receipt, referral, and analytical assistance related to processing internet crime complaints. IC3 is a national resource for internet crime complaints that has the capability and expertise to, not only receive and refer complaints, but to provide research of national significance, offer investigative assistance to state and local law enforcement, and serve as a conduit of information sharing at a national level.
