Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $89,435)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.
The Abraham House Alternative to Incarceration and Family Center Programs will provide first-time, non-violent offenders and their families and children the skills needed to strengthen the family unit and counter risk factors, which may lead to juvenile crime and detention.
The Alternative to Incarceration Program will include job preparation and retention skills, financial management, and counseling services. In addition, social service referrals to improve living conditions and domestic violence prevention will be provided. The Family Center Program will include counseling and referral services to stabilize the family, to include parenting skills and mentoring in an effort to help children remain free of criminal activity. It is anticipated that approximately 200 adults and 180 children will be served through these programs during the grant period.
