Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $375,000)

The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) will support the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Initiative. PSN is a comprehensive, strategic approach to reducing gun crime in America. By linking together federal, state, and local law enforcement, prosecutors, and community leaders, PSN provides a multifaceted approach to deterring and punishing gun crime. IACP will facilitate law enforcement's ongoing efforts to reduce violent crime by focusing enforcement and interdiction efforts on gangs and the associated violence that affects the neighborhoods they try to control. IACP will: (1) help agencies promote and implement strategies aimed at the trafficking and criminal use of illegal firearms; (2) help agencies develop and implement strategies to prevent the acquisition of illegal firearms being trafficked and illegally sold to minors and/or known gang members who use them in the commission of crimes; (3) assist agencies in the development and implementation of policies that utilize existing no-cost intelligence and investigative resources to interdict and prosecute firearm and gang violence; and, (4) take the knowledge gained and turn it into actionable intelligence that will assist in the investigation and prosecution of gang members and others convicted of violent crimes.
