Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $220,657)

The Council of State Governments Justice Center (Justice Center) will provide technical assistance to state and local government officials in those states that have received funding support through the Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program (JMHCP). These jurisdictions are receiving awards for planning, planning, and implementing, or implementing and expanding a collaborative initiative that involves a criminal justice and mental health organization and will improve the response to people with mental illness in the criminal justice system.

The Justice Center will provide technical assistance that will be focused on: helping all of these JMHCP grantees meet the goals they have identified in the proposals submitted to BJA; maximizing the value of the direct funding support that BJA has provided to each grantee: positioning the grantees to sustain their work after the grant expires; and, tracking and reporting on grantees' progress. The Justice Center will: identify the technical assistance needs of each grantee; develop off-site or on-site technical assistance plans for all grantees; develop off-site training strategies using web-based technology that addresses common questions and issues facing all grantees; and, develop strategies to link grantees at the local level with statewide criminal justice/mental health planning. The Justice Center will also focus on fostering collaboration between states and local governments.
