Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $14,583)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The Sullivan County Sheriff's Office will use their Fiscal Year 2008 Justice Assistance Grant award in the amount of $14,583 to equip various units and specialized teams within the Sheriff's Office. These units and teams include the Criminal Investigation Division (CID), the Special Operations Unit (VICE), the Information Technology Unit, and the Special Operation Respond Team (SORT). The Sheriff's Office plans to purchase software, cameras, digital video recorders, television, and DVD player, GPS units, and other pertinent equipment for the CID that will enable them to be better equipped with updated technology and software. The equipment for the VICE Unit will allow them to monitor multiple audio listening devices. The Information Technology Unit will purchase equipment that will allow their members to be better prepared when called upon to help diagram and photograph crime scenes, serious vehicle crashes, and other crimes. The SORT Unit, which operates under the Corrections Division, will receive equipment that will allow the members to document their activities as they relate to investigations of inmate matters.
