Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $771,880)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
Wayne County will serve as fiscal agent for JAG funds for Dearborn, Detroit, Inkster, and Westland. The jurisdictions agreed on the allocation of funds to each entity and all funds will be used for law enforcement purposes. The Dearborn Police Department will use the City's allocation of $19,812 for technology and overtime for the Detective Unit. The City of Detroit's allocation is $555,350 and funds will be used by the Police Department to expand its wireless network (e.g., mobile data computers, records management improvements). The Inkster Police Department will use the City's allocation of $17,935 for technological improvements, including computers, radios, and related accessories. The City of Westland's allocation of $9,721 will be used by the Police Department for technology to improve its records and information management systems and police station security. Wayne County's allocation of $169,062 will be used to support the administration of the grant and to enhance police services of the Sheriff's Office (e.g., equipment, training).
