Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $20,594)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The disparate jurisdictions of the Borough of Norristown and the County of Montgomery will utilize their Fiscal Year 2008 Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) award in the amount of $20,594 to assist and supplement the Norristown Bee-Sting Unit during the summer months. The focus of the Unit will continue to be combating quality of life crimes that tend to increase during the summer. The Bee Sting Unit has specifically targeted the Weed and Seed area, but will also respond to quality of life issues in other areas of the 3.2 square miles of the Municipality. The Borough of Norristown will fund overtime for two officers who will work with the Unit for 51 days during the summer months. The proposed outcome will be the continued reduction in quality of life crimes and an increased police presence during the peak crime hours of the summer months.
