Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $18,644)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The City of Norwalk will utilize their Fiscal Year 2008 JAG award in the amount of $18,644 to purchase a DUI checkpoint trailer and necessary support equipment. The use of a dedicated and fully-equipped DUI checkpoint trailer will allow the City of Norwalk's Public Safety personnel to conduct more effective and efficient DUI enforcement operations. The proposed trailer is enclosed, measuring 8-feet wide by 22-feet long, and will be used to store and deploy necessary road closure signs, barricades and delineators, various work lights, generators, tables, chairs, and canopies. Currently, this equipment is stored at several facilities and is labor intensive to gather the items prior to each operation. In addition to the purchase of the trailer, the City proposes to purchase additional road closure equipment including approximately 50 plastic barricades, 50 traffic cones, and 200 delineators. This equipment will be used to direct traffic through the checkpoint and create a safety zone for motorists and personnel. Additionally, this trailer will be available to Norwalk Public Safety and Sheriff's Station personnel to deploy to the scene of any large-scale incident, including crime scenes and emergency incidents.
