The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The disparate jurisdictions of the County of Tippecanoe and the City of Lafayette will utilize their Fiscal Year 2008 Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) award in the amount of $13,109 to purchase law enforcement equipment. The City of Lafayette will serve as the the fiscal agent. The Lafayette Police Department will use their portion of the JAG award ($9,176) to purchase two Motorola mounted radio units and 17 portable radio batteries. The mounted radios will expand the Police Department's mobile radio communication system. The Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department will utilize the funding ($3,933) to purchase five hands-free radio headsets, three weapon lights, three M16 side mount systems, six ammunition magazines, three weapon fore grips, three AR15/M16 magazine pouches, and one bulletproof vest. These purchases will enhance the Departments' ability to engage in narcotic enforcement operations that are inherent and generic to the police service in their jurisdictions.
