Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $12,888)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The Rockdale County Sheriff's Office will use the Fiscal Year (FY) 2008 JAG funds to expand operations in two primary areas: traffic enforcement and field operations. Funds will be used to purchase laser and radar speed detection devices. The laser and radar units will be distributed to deputies assigned to the Uniform Patrol Division for more effective traffic enforcement. In addition, funds will be used to purchase Alco-Sensors and tint meters for use with traffic enforcement or regular patrol operations. The Rockdale County Sheriff's Office is committed to aggressive enforcement of impaired driving laws, and recognizes that DUI drivers are a serious threat to public safety. Tint meters will be used to measure the amount of tint applied to vehicle windows. Georgia's window tint laws were enacted to protect the public, as well as law enforcement, since heavily tinted windows can obscure identification. To assist the field operations units as well as the SWAT Team, tasers will be purchased and utilized by trained and certified deputies in critical law enforcement incidents.
