The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The City of Vineland is submitting this joint 2008 JAG application on behalf of the cities of Vineland, Millville,Bridgeton, and the County of Cumberland to support local law enforcement programs within the County.
The Millville Police Department will utilize their portion of the funds to target prostitution, drug activity, and other crimes in the center-city downtown business district and third ward area of Millville. The monies will be used to purchase equipment and be applied to overtime which will be necessary to accomplish this task.
The Police Departments of the cities of Vineland and Bridgeton will utilize their portion of the funds to purchase equipment, technology and other materials directly related to basic law enforcement functions.
The County of Cumberland will utilize their portion of the funds to support the operations of their Megan's Law Unit which was previously supported by the Local Law Enforcement Block Grant Program. This unit is responsible for maintaining the records for 440 registered sex offenders in Cumberland County.
