Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $12,557)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The disparate jurisdictions of the City of Rome and the County of Floyd County will utilize their Fiscal Year 2008 JAG award in the amount of $12,557 to purchase anti-drug bracelets and law enforcement equipment. The City of Rome will receive $6,888 and Floyd County will receive $5,669. The City of Rome will be responsible for administering the funds. The County of Floyd will purchase 15,000 red rubber bracelets with an anti-drug message for distribution to over 14,000 children and teens in the public and private schools as part of their program to raise awareness, educate, and prevent drug use by youth. The Rome Police Department will purchase nine gas masks with canisters for patrol officers and ten ballistic plates for SWAT members
