The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

Under the Fiscal Year 2008 JAG Program, the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners will allocate funds to the Gwinnett County Police Department to reduce crime, improve public safety, provide specialized training for sworn and non-sworn personnel, and to procure equipment and technology in support of law enforcement.

The Gwinnett County Police Department intends to continue purchasing equipment for officers, and training to enhance the skills and abilities of line officers, crime prevention officers, gang and crime suppression officers, and civilian employees through training and education. Funds will also be used to continue enhancing the Crime Prevention Unit, and support existing Crime Prevention Programs and the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Festival. The department will continue its collaborative efforts with outside agencies to conduct leadership training, teen safe driving programs, and provide other community assistance. Finally, funds will be used to pursue increased citizen enrollment/participation in the crime prevention and law enforcement cooperation educational program created by the Gwinnett Neighborhood Leadership Institute and Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce.
