The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government will utilize the FY 2008 JAG award in support of their Operation PEACE (Police Eye Against Criminal Engagements) with PI (Police Interoperability). The goals of the project are to: cripple the organized narcotics trafficking conspiracies and individual offenders; identify and gather intelligence and evidence that can be used to prosecute at least five offenders; educate and gather support from citizens of the community and surrounding areas and promote awareness of the current drug related activity within their communities; educate and inform police personnel of the latest techniques and procedures of confiscating and seizing drugs and related items; maintain constant communication with the state and federal drug enforcement agencies in an effort to establish a reliable and effective working relationship; and increase the capability of interoperability among agencies. Grant funds will be used to purchase communication and surveillance equipment and for travel expenses to attend the BJA Regional Conference.
