The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The county of Clark will utilize its Fiscal Year 2008 JAG award in the amount of $441,565 to support multiple initiatives that encompass the law enforcement, prosecution, education, and technology improvement purpose areas. JAG funds allocated to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department will be used for a Mobile Field Reporting System that will allow officers to complete and transmit incident reports from the field via laptop computers to the department's Records Management System. The Clark County District Attorney will use funds to support costs for personnel to prosecute gang members, support one personnel position to coordinate the preparation of audio and video information, and to acquire technology needed for the courts and juries for high quality prosecution presentation materials. The Nevada Child Seekers will use funding for personnel costs for staff assisting law enforcement personnel in missing and abducted children cases. The Southern Nevada Gang Task Force will use its share to promote programs that prevent delinquent and violent behavior. The 8th Judicial District Court will apply funding toward comprehensive treatment for drug dependent adult and juvenile offenders.
