Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $18,686)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The city of Cambridge will use its Fiscal Year 2008 JAG award in the amount of $18,686 to continue their efforts to expand their mobile computing capabilities. The city of Cambridge Police Department will purchase three Panasonic ruggedized laptops plus the related hardware and software to support the department's 'Mobile Office' program. A portion of the total monthly cellular expenses ($989) will be paid with JAG funds as well. Currently, the department has laptops in all marked police vehicles with wireless connectivity to the state Criminal Justice Information System. The 'Mobile Office' program includes the following databases that officers are able to access remotely while fulfilling their law enforcement duties: the department's Record's Management System (RMS) including incident reporting, case management, and booking information; CJISWeb, which is an application that provides license photos, flexible vehicle registration searches, and the state's race data collection database that tracks vehicle stops; the state's Warrant Management System; restraining order database; the CAD system for calls for service history; and an 'Intranet' portal which would link to a variety of resources available on the department's network.
