Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $14,922)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The city of Spokane Valley will use its JAG funds to purchase two field computers (GoBooks) and software for city police officers to use for communication, data compilation, and reporting. The GoBooks are compatible with the security and surveillance systems in a variety of public buildings and the Rapid Responder mapping system the department uses, as well as being the primary tool for communicating with dispatch. The GoBooks are portable as well as mountable in patrol vehicles, and will have all required software for SVPD officers to compile data and produce reports in connection with responding to and investigating incidents. The city will also purchase a radar unit for traffic enforcement and digital cameras to be used for investigative and other law enforcement duties.
