Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $20,406)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states, tribes, and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The city of Antioch will use its Fiscal Year 2008 JAG award in the amount of $20,406 to support the Volunteer in Police Services (VIPS) and the Adolescent Supervision/Antioch Partnership (ASAP) programs. The city will use JAG funds to partially pay for salary of VIPS Volunteer Coordinator, who will address day-to-day logistical, personnel, and training issues. VIPS volunteers deploy police equipment, control traffic, and perform clerical duties. Without the VIPS program, sworn personnel would be required to spend valuable time performing these tasks instead of being in the field. The second program is the department's youth intervention program, ASAP, which is administered through REACH, a contract organization. ASAP contributes to the department's diversion, education, and prevention efforts by targeting juveniles that are multiple offenders. The city will use JAG funds to pay for a portion of the REACH contract to administer the ASAP program.
