Project Safe Neighborhoods

Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide commitment to reducing gun crime, links existing local programs together and provides them with necessary tools. PSN 1) takes a hard line against gun criminals, using every available means to create safer neighborhoods; 2) seeks to achieve heightened coordination among federal, state, and local law enforcement; and 3) emphasizes tactical intelligence gathering, more aggressive prosecutions, and enhanced accountability through performance measures. The United States Attorney in each federal judicial district will lead the offensive. The fiscal agent, in coordination with the PSN Task Force, will allocate funds throughout the community.

The Montana Board of Crime Control will use their FY 08 PSN funds to continue the District's Catch and No Release strategy to address the firearms and gang problems. Catch and No Release is a partnership between federal and local enforcement agencies to reduce violent crime, drug crime, and recidivism through the vigorous enforcement of federal firearms laws. Catch and No Release combines an aggressive enforcement strategy, including the area of domestic violence, with a community outreach campaign aimed at prevention through education.

Through a competitive funding process, the District will fund: 1) an aggressive and coordinated local, state, and federal law enforcement approach to gun and gang violence and illegal gun possession; 2) continued training to state and local law enforcement; 3) continued outreach initiatives and the beginning of new outreach campaigns; 4) an aggressive Project Sentry juvenile and school safety initiative; and 5) multi-jurisdictional violent crime task forces.
