Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $241,564)
Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide commitment to reducing gun crime, links existing local programs together and provides them with necessary tools. PSN takes a hard line against gun criminals, using every available means to create safer neighborhoods; seeks to achieve heightened coordination among federal, state, and local law enforcement; and emphasizes tactical intelligence gathering, more aggressive prosecutions, and enhanced accountability through performance measures. The United States Attorney in each federal judicial district will lead the offensive. The fiscal agent, in coordination with the PSN task force, will allocate funds throughout the community.
The Miami Coalition for a Safe and Drug Free Community, serving as the fiscal agent for the Southern District of Florida, will use the grant to support prosecutorial, prevention, and intervention efforts in Miami-Dade and Northern Counties. The grant will continue to fund three assistant state attorneys and one support staff to assist with prosecution services on violent crime and gang cases. The district will increase federal support for local law enforcement investigation and prosecution of federal gun law violations in federal courts by identifying and creating resource sharing agreements with service providers and state and local law enforcement agencies, coordinating violent gun crime investigation activities for prosecution, and federally prosecuting appropriate firearms cases. The district will also continue to support activity and lifestyle alternatives programs for at-risk youth in "hot spot" communities and develop and implement sustainability strategies and projects.
