Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $150,000)

This award is made under the FY 2008 Tribal Courts Assistance Program and it supports the development, implementation, enhancement, and continuing operation of tribal justice systems. Allowable elements under the program may include, but are not limited to: establishing a core structure for a tribal court; improving case management; training court personnel; acquiring additional equipment and/or software; enhancing prosecution and indigent defense; supporting probation diversion and alternative sentencing programs; accessing services; focusing on juvenile services and multi disciplinary protocols for child physical and sexual abuse; and structuring intertribal or tribal appellate systems.

The Village of Alakanuk will utilize Tribal Courts Assistance Program Category III - Enhancing the Operation of Tribal Courts funds to support expanding the court docket and updating tribal codes, rules, policies, and procedures. The Village of Alakanuk Council initiated a tribal court program in 2005 that provides local solutions to address local justice issues. The major goals of the project are to enhance the operation of the Alakanuk Tribal Court, ensure professionalism and excellence in job performance, and provide training for court personnel. The objectives are to add court dockets for juvenile delinquency and traditional dispute resolution, update tribal code, rules, policies, and procedures, negotiate inter-governmental agreements with the State of Alaska, purchase a computer for day-to-day operation of the tribal court, and provide training for judges and court personnel.
