Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $500,000)
The Renovation of Correctional Facilities on Tribal Lands Discretionary Grant Program assists tribes in developing strategies to cost effectively construct or renovate existing facilities associated with the incarceration and rehabilitation of juvenile and adult offenders subject to tribal jurisdiction. Careful planning is critical to ensure that new and renovated correctional facilities are appropriately designed for the intended population, supportive of cultural and traditional values, safe and secure when completed, and are in compliance with Bureau of Indian Affairs' standards regarding correctional operations, programs, and design.
The Pueblo of Acoma ('Pueblo') will utilize their FY 2008 Renovation of Correctional Facilities on Tribal Lands Discretionary Grant Program award to address public safety. There is an immediate need for renovating and expanding the Acoma Detention Center (ADC) to include a multi-purpose unit that can fulfill several inmate welfare and programming needs as well as staff and community needs. This grant will allow the Pueblo to fund the following items: Personnel costs (salary and fringe benefits) for an engineer position; travel costs for mileage to attend planning meetings and conduct business related to the project at Pueblo sites and nearby cities; equipment, such as kitchen appliances, tables, and furniture; supplies for consumable items, e.g., flip charts, disks, software upgrades, postage, toner, etc.; contractual/contracts for sub-contracting services to provide architectural drawings and construction management; and other costs for phone, fax, and Internet communications. Pueblo will also provide matching funds to cover personnel costs (salary and fringe benefits) for a project manager, project and programming coordinators, and data management; supplies for office administration; mileage costs for sub-contractors; and other costs for hosting planning events.
