Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $1,800,000)

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (Foundation) will expand their current national support programs and services to assist survivors of fallen firefighters. Activities to be undertaken include: adding 20 new members to the Fire Services Survivors Network; helping survivors locate grief support in their local communities; sponsoring Family Day activities at the annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend; sponsoring Family Fire Day activities at the Wildland Firefighter Foundation's Family Day; providing information on death and disability benefits; developing state and regional response teams to assist survivors in accessing Federal, State, and local benefits; offering specialized web site services and resources; and conducting an annual conference for survivors. In addition, the "Taking Care of Our Own" training program will be enhanced with expanded support and response networks made available to assist fire service managers. The Foundation will promote initiatives to reduce line-of-duty deaths.
