Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $400,000)

The Congressionally Selected Awards Program, authorized by the Omnibus Appropriations Act, 2009 (Pub. L. 111-8), helps improve the functioning of the criminal justice system, prevent or combat juvenile delinquency, and/or assist victims of crime (other than compensation). Funds should be used for the projects selected by Congress, in the amounts specified in the joint explanatory statement incorporated by reference into Pub. L. 111-8, and generally consistent with one or more of the following statutory purposes: improving the functioning of the criminal justice system, preventing or combating juvenile delinquency, or assisting victims of crime (other than compensation). Each of these purposes is framed using language drawn, respectively, from the former Byrne discretionary statute, the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act, the Victims of Crime Act, and the Violence Against Women Act. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 09 Congressional Budget and by the joint explanatory statement that is incorporated by reference into the FY09 Omnibus Appropriations Act.

Robertson County will utilize the FY 2009 Congressionally Selected Award to procure necessary law enforcement equipment and supplies for its sheriff's office. The Robertson County Sheriff's office will utilize said items to conduct daily operations. This will help improve the efficiency of law enforcement services to citizens through the use of personnel, equipment, and technology.

Specifically, the equipment to be acquired will allow for improved organized investigations and management of on-duty personnel, and the care, security, storage, and deployment of said equipment. Activities to be implemented include: (1) staffing at all mass public gatherings of people where assaults, thefts, burglaries, narcotics possession, usage, and homicides have occurred; (2) locate missing and lost people; (3) conduct surveillance and tracking of criminals by the use of property investigations where equipment that is stolen is hidden with GPS transmitters (in order to track and recover said equipment); and (4) utilize a tire spiking system for the pursuit and arrest of fleeing felons. These activities will help better protect the public and have a positive impact on the reduction of crime within the jurisdiction.
