Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $349,995)

The Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program is designed to assist states, state courts, local courts, units of local government, and Indian tribal governments in developing and establishing drug courts for substance-abusing adult and juvenile offenders. Drug court programs funded by the Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program are required by law to target nonviolent offenders. The program supports the following activities: adult drug court implementation, single jurisdiction drug court enhancement, statewide drug court enhancement, and planning efforts.

Milwaukee County will use Fiscal Year 2009 Adult Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program funding to implement the Milwaukee County Drug Treatment Court. The court will target high risk/high need non-violent individuals identified as having significant substance abuse problems and facing incarceration in the state prison system. Integrated treatment services will be built in through the 12-month long program. A continuum of treatment services will also be provided through case management and services that includes parenting skills, education, employment, and housing. Over the course of the three year project period, the salary of a drug treatment court coordinator responsible for the planning and implementation of court activities will be supported. A process evaluation reviewing program coverage, court processing, stakeholder collaboration, and participant activity will also be funded. It is anticipated that approximately 300 offenders will participate in the program during the grant period.
