Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $198,414)

The Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program is designed to assist states, state courts, local courts, units of local government, and Indian tribal governments in developing and establishing drug courts for substance-abusing adult and juvenile offenders. Drug court programs funded by the Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program are required by law to target nonviolent offenders. The program supports the following activities: adult drug court implementation, single jurisdiction drug court enhancement, statewide drug court enhancement, and planning efforts.

Denver City and County will use the drug court enhancement funds to address their lack of treatment resources for drug court citizens in Denver. This enhancement will provide the most effective treatment for substance abuse in the areas of primary health and mental health care as well as social and other support services. The proposed enhancement will link offenders in the Denver Drug Court system to treatment and other supportive services, including SSI/SSDI, Medicaid, Section 8 Housing, case management, and assessment services. By providing these services, drug court clients will have a greater chance at graduating from drug court and reduce further involvement in the criminal justice system.
