Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $499,536)

The National Center for State Courts is implementing the Adult Drug Court Research to Practice Initiative funding, in partnership with the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) to support the Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program (42 U.S.C. 3797u et seq.). The Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program assists communities to develop effective drug court strategies for nonviolent substance-abusing offenders. The purpose of the Research to Practice Initiative is to translate promising evidence-based adult drug court research findings into targeted, usable products for drug court practitioners. Priorities for topics to be addressed by this initiative include refining target populations and eligibility requirements to maximize impact and efficiency given local priorities and resources, and identifying program operations best practices such as incentives and sanctions, treatment modalities, service option screening, and legal and other issues to balance drug court participants' rights with public safety needs.
