Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $249,982)

The Justice Management Institute (JMI) will use these funds to support the Urban Court Managers Network (UCMN) and the Rural Court Improvement Network (RCIN). These two networking initiatives focus on strengthening the ability of court leaders and managers to work effectively with judges, staff, and key justice system partners, as well as with each other in order to improve court operations and overall justice system performance.

Both UCMN and RCIN will provide a structured forum for justice system leaders including court administrators, court clerks, presiding judges, and senior court staff in trial courts and in state court administrative offices to exchange information about effective approaches and practices that address common problems and challenges. In addition, both Networks' projects will provide participants with: an opportunity to showcase and discuss promising innovations and exemplary programs in courts; feedback and input from experienced court leaders who face similar challenges; and strengthened networks of court leaders who are familiar with innovations and effective practices. Information and materials that describe good and promising practices in urban courts and in rural courts will be developed and disseminated.
