Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $649,995)
The American University (AU) will implement the Criminal Courts Technical Assistance Project (CCTAP)using practitioner-consultants and project staff to provide BJA-sponsored training and technical assistance. The project will educate participants from criminal courts and related agencies at the state and local levels of government in order to enhance their capacity to respond to precipitous increases in crime, while improving the judicial system's ability to provide prompt, efficient, and fair adjudication of criminal cases. The project will also promote adoption of proven and promising judicial system practices relating to the operations and services of courts and related agencies, and facilitate peer networking among judicial system leaders and administrative staff.
AU will give priority in CCTAP service delivery to courts and related justice agencies whose caseloads reflect a precipitous increase in violent crime and gang activity; and it will undertake a national initiative to train judicial system practitioners in the design and implementation of Differentiated Case Management strategies to enable them to cope with rising caseloads within the context of constricted budgetary resources.
