Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $125,000)

The Institute for Intergovernmental Research (IIR) will enhance and expand access to the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS). NMVTIS allows titling agencies and law enforcement to instantly and reliably verify vehicle title information electronically. Vehicle title information is accessible via a secure web interface that provides law enforcement direct access to title, title brand, and stolen vehicle information from all participating states. Access to NMVTIS provides officers with data on vehicles reported as junk/salvage, helps identify stolen vehicles, reduces title fraud, and enhances the ability to identify theft rings and other criminal enterprises involving vehicles. IIR will identify and enhance data sources, enhance search capability, and evaluate and report progress.
