Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $22,143)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local governments, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The disparate jurisdictions consisting of Troup County and the city of La Grange will use their 2009 JAG local award in the amount of $22,143 to support the needs of local law enforcement agencies in the areas of equipment and supplies to assist in the prevention and control of crime and to improve the criminal justice system. The Troup County Sheriff's Office will use its share of grant funds to upgrade and modernize reporting and data base access methods. The La Grange Police Department will use its funds to purchase furnishings for their training center and to obtain a multi-media projector and Internet access to better train officers and surrounding law enforcement agencies. These purchases are expected to greatly reduce the amount of time needed to complete administrative tasks and will also heighten the level of professionalism of each department. This will also enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of law enforcement operations.
