Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $586,892)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local governments, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

DeKalb County will use the Fiscal Year 2009 JAG funds to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on the County's needs and conditions, to include the preservation of jobs. The JAG funds will be used for local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice activities that will improve and enhance crime prevention strategies. The DeKalb County District Attorney's Office will use the funds to support salaries and personnel services. The DeKalb County Drug Court (DCDC) will use the funds to continue the 2nd Track's Case Manager Program and offset a portion of treatment costs. Funding will be provided to Parks and Recreation to purchase equipment for the Healthy Choices Initiative. The DeKalb County Marshal's Office will upgrade information systems, address connectivity and data sharing issues. The DeKalb County Police Department will purchase and install technology and equipment to support the Department in efforts to reduce speeding, prevent fatalities, prevent animal cruelty, and raise public awareness. DeKalb County Schools will implement a systematic training plan to operate the 'Classrooms of Difference' educational training program. The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office Jail Video Upgrade Project will enhance the overall security of the jail, and the Office of the DeKalb Solicitor-General will continue to enhance the Jobs Not Jail Program in an effort to reduce crime.
