Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $185,384)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local governments, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The disparate jurisdictions of Johnson County and the cities of Olathe, Lenexa, Shawnee, and Overland Park will use their 2009 JAG award to support equipment purchases and increase intelligence and communications across the county. Johnson County, serving as the fiscal agent, will use $16,287 to purchase a covert pole camera and an internet-based GPS remote tracking system for the Johnson County Sheriff's Office. The city of Olathe will use $71,833 to purchase AR15 rifles to replace existing stock for the Olathe Police Department, as well as purchase license plate reader software. The city of Lenexa will use $14,044.85 to purchase training software and digital evidence equipment for the Lenexa Police Department. The city of Overland Park will use $64,976 to purchase hybrid vehicles to replace the aging Overland Park's Police Department's fleet. The city of Shawnee will use $18,230 to purchase a GPS Live Vehicle Tracking and Data Logging System, video cameras and GPS navigation devices for the Shawnee Police Department.
