Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $1,161,026)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local governments, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The city of Seattle, serving as the fiscal agent for this award, will share the JAG award with 13 disparate jurisdictions within King County. In a disparate situation, the units of local government must apply for an award with a single, joint application. Each jurisdiction's allocation will be used for activities and projects that will provide meaningful and measurable outcomes consistent with the goals of the JAG program. Specifically, funds will be used towards personnel, officer overtime, updated equipment and technology, vehicles, computer software and hardware, records management, firearms, officer safety, traffic enforcement, and training. In addition, funds will target radar and traffic enforcement, graffiti abatement, gang-related crime, forensic science, court security, domestic violence, and criminal investigation capabilities.
