Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $73,897)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local governments, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The disparate jurisdictions consisting of the county of Ocean, the borough of Seaside Heights, the township of Brick, Dover, and Lakewood will use their Fiscal Year 2009 JAG award in the amount of $73,897 for law enforcement projects. The township of Lakewood, serving as the fiscal agent, will use its portion of the grant to enhance its geographical information system capabilities by purchasing an up-to-date GIS map system that will be used to provide prompt and accurate information for public protection as well as increasing police, fire, and EMS personnel safety. The borough of Seaside Heights will use its share to expand its communications system by purchasing handheld radios and supporting equipment. The township of Brick will use their funds ot purchase state-mandated reflected vests to protect and maintain the safety and well-being of its officers. They will also purchase portable radios to enhance and improve departmental communications. The township of Dover will use its share to improve their record keeping system by purchasing new scanners and shelving/storage devices. The county of Ocean will not receive any funds from this grant.
