The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local governments, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The disparate jurisdictions of Jefferson County and the cities of Arvada, Lakewood, and Wheat Ridge will use their JAG award to support equipment purchases to increase intelligence and communications across the county. The city of Lakewood, serving as the fiscal agent, will use the award to purchase new mobile data computers for the city police department. Jefferson County will use the grant to fund overtime for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Crime Prevention Unit Deputies, purchase heavy-duty paper shredding machines, purchase digital electronic earplugs and custom receiver earpieces, and purchase materials and supplies for the 'Communities Against Senior Exploitation" crime prevention program. The city of Arvada will use the funds to purchase smoke canisters, mats for physical training, and protective headgear for the Arvada Police Department. The city of Wheat Ridge will use the grant to purchase automated license plate reader systems.
