Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $1,560,729)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local governments, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The city of Indianapolis will use Fiscal Year 2009 JAG funding for a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on the local public safety needs. The police department will enhance tactical policing efforts, update equipment and technology, and further community policing efforts. Funds will be used for contract services to collect, analyze, and report crime data, equipment for the Chaplain's victim services program, bicycles for community policing, police cruisers, training, and other required law enforcement equipment. The city will provide funds to the Marion County Prosecutor's Office to retain two deputy prosecutor positions that will help in addressing youth crime and holding juveniles accountable for their actions. In addition, funding will be provided to the Marion County Sheriff's Office to purchase police cruisers for deputies in their sex offender registry compliance and enforcement unit.
