Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $57,686)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local governments, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The disparate jurisdictions of Jasper County and the City of Joplin will use their Fiscal Year 2009 JAG award in the amount of $57,686 to support equipment purchases for their communities. The city of Joplin, serving as the fiscal agent, will use its share of the award ($11,554) to purchase essential materials needed for improvements to the city's current jail facility. These improvements will assist in creating a temporary holding facility for personnel authorized to participate in the work release program, alleviating the problem of jail overcrowding.
Jasper County will use its share of the award ($46,132) to purchase a generator for the Jasper County Sheriff's Office. This generator is needed to maximize emergency services to the communities of Jasper County during power outages. Currently operations are limited during electrical disruptions, causing delays or the denial of services to the citizens of Jasper County.
