The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local governments, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The Sheboygan County Sheriff's Office ($8,197) and the city of Sheboygan Police Department ($7,197) will use their FY 2009 Local JAG award to purchase equipment. Sheboygan County, serving as the fiscal agent, will purchase a digital analog converter to increase the ability to record communications within dispatch, Sentina SS087 partitions, a charge guard to prevent drain on batteries from radios and laptops, and tactical gas masks and canister to allow the Corrections Division Emergency Response Team to respond more efficiently. The city of Sheboygan Police Department will use their funds to purchase light bars for unmarked detective vehicles, an entry ram for supervisor's vehicle, canon image copier, ballistic shield, Garmin GPS unit to be used for officers who are out of town, Sony handycam recorder to be used in the investigations of crime, tactical vests for investigators, and pre-breath test devices to replace outdated ones.
