The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local governments, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The disparate jurisdictions consisting of Ingham County and the cities of Lansing and East Lansing will use their JAG local award in the amount of $194,603 to support the needs of the local law enforcement agencies in the areas of technology, training, equipment, supplies, and investigations. These funds will assist in the prevention and control of crime, and also improve the criminal justice system. The Lansing Police Department will obtain new video technology for its detention center that will improve the safety and security of the center. The Ingham County Sheriff's Department will advance the law enforcement capabilities of their dive team, increase the technology available to front-line officers, and complete the upgrade of the mobile shelving technology in their evidence storage facility. The East Lansing Police Department will focus on officer training and also upgrade the technology of their investigations unit.
