Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $14,100)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local governments, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The disparate jurisdiction consisting of Portage County and the city of Stevens Point will use their FY 09 JAG award in the amount of $14,100 to purchase equipment for their law enforcement agencies. The city of Stevens Point, serving as the fiscal agent, will use its share of the award ($9,200) to fund installation of a fiber optic network that will connect a live real-time three station digital video monitoring system of the street activity in a four block of Main Street in downtown Stevens Point to the Stevens Point Police Department. Portage County will use its share of the award ($4,900)to purchase Combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW for the Portgage County Sheriff's Office's Panasonic Toughbook CF-30. The DVD upgrades will allow officer training capabilities in the patrol squads.
